Background
  • Conventional water sources are declining:
    •  Colorado River transfers to be reduced to 4.4 Mac-ft/yr
    •  Successive droughts, plus agriculture to urban transfers
  • ¢Must decrease dependence on imported waters:
    • l Energy of conveyance >90% of total cost for imported waters
    • l Infrastructure damage by imported water salinity ~$108
     ¢VISION:
    • l Advance water production technologies in order to economically develop
new and sustainable alternative sources for potable, irrigation, and other consumptive water uses.
    • l Train/educate the next generation of California water technology professionals

Energy Cost of Water Desalination
 in Southern California

Metropolitan Water District of Southern California;
(b) The California Desalination Task Force.

Estimated Cost of Desalination

Brackish Water
Seawater
Estimated Cost ($/acre-foot)
$130-$360
$700-$1200
Additional Distribution Costs
($/acre-foot)
up to ~ $890-$1,120
$100 -$300
Goal
Reduce technical difficulties (scaling, concentrate minimization & disposal)
Reduce cost by a factor of 2-3
